Organizing Winter Clothes

Winter is almost over. Even though it still gets cold here in Chicago its time to start packing up those heavier clothes and start looking into spring. Soon you will be wearing shorts and flip flops!
It can be difficult to determine what you should put away until next year and what to keep out. If the temperature drops you want to be prepared.
Here are a few items that you can put away that will jump start your closet organizing.
Heavy wools
Heavy coats
Bulky sweaters
Winter sports gear-hats, gloves scarves or ski pants
Winter boots
Organizing your heavy winter clothes now will make the change of seasons a little easier next year. Also, by opening up space in your closet you can start adding a few of your warmer weather clothes like rain jackets, lightweight materials and cottons.

Save Energy, Save Money And Get Organized One Computer At A Time!

At the end of the day, take a few minutes to organize your office space. Put everything away, make a "To-Do" list and please turn off your computer! Computers eat up a lot of energy when left on over night. Try about 2.8 billion a year and that is just the U.S! Computers that are kept on overnight and on the weekends omit 20 million tons of carbon dioxide. Yikes!
So please, start a new office organizing habit this spring and turn off your computer at the end of each day. Your computer will run better, you will save some money and get organized at the same time.

Organize A Swap

Here's a quick way to get rid of items you no longer need. Organize a themed swap party where everyone brings items they no longer need. It could be kitchen items, home accessories or even clothes. Its a great way to get rid of items and give them a new home. If you pick a theme its easier to look at one category at a time and makes the task of organizing a little easier. If the theme is kitchen cooking equipment all you have to do is go through your pots and pans and weed out a few that are not getting any use. This also is a good time to toss out those scratched, burnt and broken pieces too and reorganize your cabinets!

Get Ready For Tax Season

Starting to put your paperwork in order now will get you ready for tax season. If you think you're getting a refund, the sooner you organize that paperwork, the sooner you will get your money.

Make it easy on yourself by setting up your 2009 files now. Its as easy as adding a label to a hanging file in your current system or use an envelope with a clasp or zip lock bag to hold receipts and other paper work.

If you are unsure of paperwork needed, check your return from last year and use as a guide.

Organizing Your Gifts

Use technology this holiday season to organize your gift giving. Big stores like Target, Amazon and Toys R Us have online wish lists that you can use to do your shopping for friends and family. A wish list is just like a bridal registry where you register for items you would like, but you can use it for other events like holidays, birthdays and graduations. Create your own online wish list to make it easier for your gift givers. Buy gifts that someone actually wants. You don't want to add clutter to someone else's home or your own.

The cost of gas is at a all time high right now. So joy riding and running errands in the car is becoming a thing of the past. Here are a few tips to getting organized before you step on that gas peddle.

#1 Batch your errands in the same area so that you can drive straight to your final destination. Map out every other location to stop at along on the way. This is how the delivery drivers do it!

Whats Under That Bag?

If you went through your closet recently looking for empty hangers you may have found a few extra plastic bags that contain clothes cleaned and pressed by the dry cleaner. Or you found empty hangers with a plastic bag hanging over it. This is a huge waste of space.
I recommend taking the plastic off of all of your clothes as soon as they come in from the dry cleaner so they can breath and you can see what you have to wear. I don't recommend using the plastic dry cleaner bags as a dust preventive. Add a garment bag to your closet for special occasion clothing for protection.
Hopefully by removing the extra plastic bags and hangers and adding a garment bag you can not only gain space but protect your clothing and start categorizing your wardrobe.

Hang It Up

Save a little space in your closet by getting rid of used hangers. Go through your closet and pull all of the empty hangers. Now take a look at the pile. What do you have? A lot of wire hangers, trouser hangers or clip hangers that you got with your last department store purchase? If you are not using these in your wardrobe let them go. Wire hangers from the dry cleaner can be recycled so bring them back on your next trip. Those small trouser hangers are of no use to you if you fold your pants over a hanger. Finally those freebie plastic hangers from the department store should never come home with you if you are not using.

Tip* If you have some items in your closet like a silky blouse that falls off the hanger, get a specialty hanger with a non slip surface that keeps clothes on the hanger.

Organizing Your Dining Life

We all love our grandma's china and now that you've inherited it you get to keep it forever. The problem is it never gets used and its taking up a lot of space in your already cramped dining room. Some of the reasons why the china never gets used is because you already have a set of china and you don't have a lot of formal dinner parties of 12. If the dishes are taking up too much space consider packing them up in padded china storage bins and moving it out of your immediate storage space where they are not going to get damaged.
If you would like to occasionlly enjoy a cup of tea in from this beautiful set keep a tea cup and saucer out so you can see it, use it and remember grandma.

The goal of organization is to be happily efficient. And when working to become efficient it is hard not to address the issue of multitasking. I have collected a handful of articles on multitasking and offer links to them here. In my personal experience I have found that multitasking in many situations hurts the quality of work and can be counter productive when needing to shift between complicated tasks. But I realize that there are tasks and situations where multitasking can be useful. So to be efficient we need to know when to employ multitasking and when not too. One item all of these articles mention is that talking on the cell phone while driving is a multitasking don't with high risk compared to the reward.
